Do imagery and perception belong to the same kind of mental state or do they differ fundamentally? Imagery, in fact, has a distinct perceptual character: it manifests in all sensory modalities and shares important similarities with perception (while there are also significant differences to consider). The term “perceptualism” refers to the view that imagery cannot be understood apart from perception (Cavedon-Taylor, 2021). The purpose of this work is to discuss Perceptualism in its two interpretations (“strong” and “weak” perceptualism) and determine which one provides the most accurate treatment of this alleged relationship. In Chapter 1, I introduce the complex realm of imagination and offer reasons for investigating imagery’s perceptual nature. In Chapter 2, I discuss Weak Perceptualism (Martin, 2002; Soteriou, 2013), the view that while imagery is similar to perception, it is still a distinct mental state.
