The research thesis investigates the phenomenon of urbanization in the third world, stressing the diffusion of informal settlements (slums) and the related shelter policies that have been adopted over the years all over the world to tackle the problem, with a major focus on the Kenyan case. In second part of the work, a slum upgrading project currently underway in Kibera (the largest slum in Kenya) with the support of the UN-Habitat is analyzed through a 3 month fieldwork, and some relevant critical points are underlined, especially with respect to the issues of participation and the perception of the project by the beneficiary community.
