Background:
One of the main tasks of gas turbine design is the efficiency increase for example by increasing the combustion temperature and resulting the turbine entry temperature. Therefore a critical part of the system is the turbine blade especially the leading edge due to high temperatures and thermal gradients. Different cooling techniques were investigated in the last decades to enhance the convective heat transfer. A promising method for the leading edge cooling is a vortex chamber or swirl chamber, although the complex flow is far from being completely understood. A vortex chamber consists of a pipe with tangential inflow ducts. These induce a highly three dimensional (3D) swirling flow, that improves the heat transfer. The task of this thesis is to investigate the fluid dynamics of a vortex chamber via Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements.
