Descrizione:
Orthopaedic implants have only a finite lifetime. The most important factor controlling the lifetime of PE prostheses is the wear resistance. Crosslinking has been employed with success to improve the wear resistance. In recent years also chemical crosslinking by organic peroxides has been used. In this study the effects of three different peroxides and contents of each of them on the mechanical and chemical-physical properties of medical grade UHMWPE were investigated and compared. All the specimens were processed by both normal compression moulding and high-pressure crystallization and their effects on the morphological features and crosslinking process were investigated. Furthermore, as peroxides are known to create radical species that can trigger the oxidative degradation of PE, the effect of the addition of an antioxidant was also investigated.
