The thesis aims to exploit Covid-19 lockdown policies to estimate the incidence of vehicular traffic in affecting air pollution in Northern Italy and Switzerland, also presenting a review of the air quality policies and the basis to understand the air pollution problem. The empirical analysis is developed with the Propensity Score Matching balanced with the covariates which are the major influencing factors on the outcome. The results provide empirical confirmation regarding a scenario in which the vehicular traffic is drastically limited, as it was during the Italian lockdown, showing an important decrease in nitrogen dioxide emissions, while the policy comparison allows to understand the impact of a more severe vehicular traffic policy. Lockdown policies are not likely to be replicable, but this data provides empirical support for potential models of alternative mobility.

The thesis provides results about the difference in air pollutants emission levels to verify the impact of the vehicular traffic reduction using the comparison between different lockdown policies. Results which may have been theoretically guessed, but now can be empirically confirmed.
