The purpose of this research is to investigate the strategic electoral behaviour of Social Democratic parties in six European democracies and their electoral responses. In detail, we sought to understand what causes and effects directly or indirectly influenced the electoral performance of six specific Social Democratic parties in as many Western European democracies: Italy, France, Germany, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Austria and the United Kingdom. Taking a temporal leap, we anticipate that this thesis was part of the long-running debate about which actions are electorally successful for political parties. Our contribution was aimed - initially with a qualitative approach and only later with a view supported by, admittedly, quantitative logic - at shedding light on which issues, the Western European Social Democracies, should have paid more attention to in the election campaign.
